A major upgrade is coming to healthcare research in the Himalayas. On July 11, 2026, Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda laid the foundation for ICMR’s new Centre for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research in Keylong, Lahaul & Spiti. This upgraded facility tackles the harsh realities of mountain life—focusing on how extreme altitude, shifting climate patterns, and isolation affect human health. Beyond studying high-altitude physiology and infectious diseases, the center is taking a high-tech approach to rural medicine. By partnering with organizations like the military and DRDO, it aims to deploy drone-based medical deliveries, telemedicine, and real-time health tracking to better protect mountain and tribal communities.
