India is stepping up efforts to accelerate hydropower development in Jammu & Kashmir with a focus on improving water storage capacity and regulating river flows in the Indus Basin.
Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, during a two-day visit beginning 4 January 2026, reviewed the progress of key hydropower projects on the Chenab river, including the Salal, Sawalkot and Ratle projects. The Chenab is one of the western rivers governed under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty.
During the visit, the Minister inspected the 690 MW Salal Power Project and directed the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to expedite sediment management measures to optimise water utilisation. He also conducted an aerial survey of the 1,856 MW Sawalkot project and visited the 850 MW Ratle Hydroelectric Project in Kishtwar, where he laid the foundation stone for dam concreting works.
Emphasising the strategic importance of timely execution, the Minister called for completion of all projects within stipulated timelines to enable efficient power generation and strengthen regional energy infrastructure.
