India now has 132 operational Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plants with a combined production capacity of 920 tonnes per day, with additional capacity under development through the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the progress, highlighting SATAT’s role in converting agricultural and organic waste into clean fuel while boosting rural incomes and reducing emissions. Oil and gas marketing companies such as IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL, and IGL have invited entrepreneurs to supply CBG for marketing, strengthening the waste-to-energy ecosystem.
Launched in 2018, SATAT aims to build nationwide infrastructure for producing CBG from biomass and waste. Emphasising its impact, Minister Puri said that material once considered waste is now driving sustainable energy growth and rural development.
