Chennai Metro Delays: Poonamallee Stretch Misses June Target

The operational launch of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd’s (CMRL) Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani stretch faces continuous setbacks. Although the 14.6-km track has received mandatory safety clearances, six stations—Saligramam, Avichi School, Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, and Alapakkam Junction—remain under construction.

Originally slating a June completion, CMRL officials now target late September for finishing works, aiming for a potential October or November station opening post-CMRS inspection. The delay stems from major structural hurdles at double-decker interchange stations, upcoming work constraints around active train lines, and recent labor shortages. As a result, commuters along Arcot Road must continue navigating heavy traffic despite near-ready metro infrastructure.
