India’s first hydrogen-powered train is close to commissioning, with a pilot run planned on the Jind–Sonipat section in Haryana.
The project, being implemented by Northern Railway, has secured an uninterrupted 11 kV power supply for the hydrogen production plant at Jind. The facility, which has a hydrogen storage capacity of 3,000 kg, is in the final stages of commissioning and generates hydrogen through electrolysis, supporting green hydrogen production. Manufacturing of the hydrogen-powered train has been completed, and the train is now ready for operational trials. Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi has underlined the importance of regular reviews of the power supply system to ensure seamless operations.
The hydrogen-powered train forms part of Indian Railways’ pilot programme to evaluate green hydrogen technology for sustainable rail transport. The initiative aligns with India’s broader objective of reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner energy solutions in public transportation.
