Coimbatore North Station Gets ₹11.5-Crore Makeover

Redevelopment of Coimbatore North railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) is nearing completion, with the ₹11.5-crore project expected to be completed by September.

Inaugurated in August 2023, the redevelopment was initially scheduled for completion by February but was delayed due to execution-related issues. The remaining work mainly involves surface-level improvements, including nameboards, terminal building entry and exit arches, and other minor aesthetic upgrades.

Elevator installation is also progressing, while the additional platform being developed for MEMU services is around 70% complete. The railways is considering operating one or two MEMU services originating from Coimbatore North and Podanur once the platform is ready.

The Podanur Train Users Association has raised concerns that the existing eight-coach MEMU rakes could be withdrawn and sent back to Chennai following the introduction of a 12-coach MEMU service to Mettupalayam. Railway officials, however, have denied any such plan and said there are currently no proposals to return the existing rakes.

The association has also called for the introduction or restoration of MEMU services connecting Coimbatore with Pollachi or Dindigul, citing the need to strengthen regional rail connectivity.
