India’s Metro Titans Eye West Asia: BEML and DMRC Join Forces

Public sector companies BEML Limited and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) are planning to jointly bid for upcoming metro rail projects in West Asia, according to officials familiar with the development. The two entities have identified a pipeline of future opportunities under this strategic partnership.

A senior official noted that projects in West Asia are a key focus area. While DMRC has traditionally concentrated on operations, this collaboration aims to deliver end-to-end solutions, including the supply of rolling stock.

The partnership was formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Wednesday, creating a framework for jointly identifying, pursuing, and executing metro rail projects.

BEML stated that the agreement marks a shift from a supply-driven approach to a comprehensive engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model, with a strong emphasis on export markets.

Shantanu Roy said the collaboration would enhance BEML’s presence in the rail and metro sector. He highlighted that BEML’s manufacturing strengths, combined with DMRC’s expertise in execution and operations, would enable both organisations to offer globally competitive, integrated solutions.

The MoU is designed to deepen collaboration and explore areas of mutual interest in metro rail systems.

Vikas Kumar stressed the importance of developing indigenous technologies, particularly propulsion systems for rolling stock and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) used in high-speed rail, metro, and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) projects. He added that combining DMRC’s technical expertise with BEML’s design and manufacturing capabilities could help develop indigenous TBMs.

Overall, the partnership represents a significant step toward expanding India’s metro rail expertise into global markets by offering integrated solutions spanning design, manufacturing, and operations.
