Mumbai Metro Line 11: South Mumbai Goes Underground!

Mumbai Metro’s second underground corridor, Metro Line 11, is advancing as the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) has submitted its proposal to the Central Government for approval.

The 17.4 km line, estimated to cost ₹23,487 crore, will connect Anik Depot in Sion to the Gateway of India, improving connectivity between the eastern suburbs and South Mumbai. Running beneath densely populated areas like Wadala, Byculla, and CSMT, the line will offer an interchange with Metro Line 4 at Wadala. It aims to serve localities distant from suburban railway stations and support BEST bus routes.

At Anik Depot, plans include a car depot and a multi-level parking facility for BEST buses, integrating commercial use into depot land—similar to other ongoing BEST projects. The Maharashtra government approved the project in September, requiring 22.7 hectares of land. Funding support is being sought from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
