Redesigning Hebbal: Metro Hub Takes a New Turn

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has drastically reduced its land request for the proposed multi-modal transport hub at Hebbal—from 45 acres to just nine. In a revised proposal submitted to the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), BMRCL has scrapped its original plan for a metro depot and reworked the hub's design.

The initial blueprint envisioned a large-scale transport node integrating metro lines—Blue, Orange, Red—and airport connectivity, along with parking infrastructure. It was touted as a critical solution to North Bengaluru’s traffic issues. Political leaders, including MPs Tejasvi Surya and PC Mohan, and MLA S Suresh Kumar, had strongly advocated for allocating the full 45-acre plot.

However, a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on May 5 led to directions for a redesign. The revision also comes amid a competing land claim by the BBMP, which has proposed a 16.6 km tunnel road connecting Hebbal to Silk Board.
