The Future is Now: Pune-Bhigwan Rail Line Goes Automatic

The Pune–Bhigwan railway corridor is set for a significant upgrade with the installation of a new automatic signalling system, aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing travel time.

Preparatory work is already underway, and the 160-km corridor is targeted for completion by 2027. The automatic system will replace manual signal clearance, enabling multiple trains to operate safely on the same track. A senior railway official noted that the installation will include high-grade signalling cables, modern electronic equipment, and upgraded track-side systems to support higher traffic density. The current two-signal conventional mechanism often results in delays, particularly with rising passenger and freight volumes.

The new system will provide real-time signal updates, ensuring smoother train operations. The upgrade is expected to enhance punctuality, minimise human error, and improve safety—benefiting thousands of daily commuters and easing congestion during peak hours. Once completed, the project will transform one of the busiest routes in the Pune railway division.
