On January 5, 2026, Puducherry inaugurated three major infrastructure projects under the Smart City Mission, marking a significant step toward strengthening urban infrastructure.
The initiatives were inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai and are aimed at enhancing urban services, housing, and sports facilities. A modern mini stadium has been developed at Anna Thidal, a historic playground, featuring new spectator galleries, a stage, parking facilities for 1,500 two-wheelers, and other modern amenities. Built at a cost of ₹121.9 million, the facility is expected to benefit students from nearby schools and the wider community.
In the power sector, 26 aging substations were replaced with compact, maintenance-free units, while 19 km of coastal overhead power lines were converted into underground cables to reduce disruptions caused by weather conditions. The power infrastructure upgrade was carried out at a total cost of ₹282 million.
Additionally, 220 new housing units were constructed for economically weaker section families, replacing dilapidated structures. The new homes are equipped with essential amenities such as water supply, drainage, and electricity and are ready for allotment. Together, these projects underscore Puducherry’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable urban development.
