Rs 700-Cr Housing Project Stalled Over Environmental Clearance

The Chandigarh Administration’s Environment Department has instructed the Municipal Corporation (MC) to secure prior environmental clearance for its proposed Rs 700-crore housing project in Manimajra.

In an official communication, the department stated that the project falls under the scope of the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2006, and thus requires mandatory clearance from the competent authority. It noted that township and area development projects covering less than 50 hectares but with a built-up area exceeding 1,50,000 sq. m are classified under Category 8(b) of the EIA schedule.

The department clarified that the built-up area includes all covered spaces—such as multiple floors, basements, and service areas—and urged the Municipal Corporation to initiate the clearance process before proceeding further with the project.
