Delhi's Elevated Solution: A New Era for Traffic Flow

In a major move to tackle worsening traffic congestion in the capital, the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government has unveiled plans for an ambitious elevated corridor project along the city’s Inner Ring Road, which currently spans approximately 55 km from Shalimar Bagh to Azadpur.

The proposed elevated corridor will extend to nearly 80 km, accounting for ramps, loops, and link roads to improve connectivity and eliminate traffic bottlenecks. The project is estimated to cost between ₹5,500 crore and ₹6,000 crore, with a construction cost of around ₹100 crore per km.

Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma has directed officials to fast-track the appointment of a consultant and begin work on the Detailed Project Report (DPR). “With increasing traffic pressure on the Inner Ring Road, the elevated corridor will help decongest key stretches. Some land acquisition will be necessary, and strategically placed ramps and loops will link the corridor with arterial roads,” the Minister stated.

The project aims to decongest major traffic choke points such as AIIMS, Moolchand, Dhaula Kuan, Ashram, and ITO. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly enhance traffic flow to and from arterial routes, highways, and airport access roads, improving overall urban mobility in Delhi.
