Four Foot-Overbridges Approved for Safer Koradi Road Crossings

In response to persistent concerns from residents and the traffic police over pedestrian safety, MLA Chandrashekhar Bawankule and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have announced the construction of four foot-overbridges (FOBs) along Koradi Road in Nagpur.

The project, awarded in March by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to Oriental Nagpur-Betul Highway, is intended to provide safe and convenient crossing points for pedestrians across the busy corridor. Each FOB will feature strategically located landing zones designed to align with pedestrian movement patterns.

The foot-overbridges will be constructed at four key high-traffic locations: Modern School Square, Panjra Bus Stop, Shivaji Maharaj Square (near Chakradhar Kirana Stores), and a point between two flyovers identified as a mid-surface crossing. These areas were marked as critical due to frequent pedestrian incidents, heavy traffic flow, and the lack of formal crossing infrastructure.

The initiative follows recommendations by the traffic police, who highlighted increasing pedestrian-related accidents and the pressures of ongoing infrastructure expansion in the Koradi Road area. The FOBs are expected to reduce accident rates and enhance traffic flow by discouraging jaywalking and unauthorized road crossings.

“This project marks a crucial step toward ensuring pedestrian safety and addressing long-standing concerns,” said a statement from the MLA’s office. The move has been well received by the public, particularly by commuters, schoolchildren, and elderly residents. It reinforces the government’s commitment to upgrading urban infrastructure in fast-developing areas of Nagpur with a focus on inclusive and safe mobility.
