The Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled plans for a 700-km access-controlled expressway connecting Gorakhpur in eastern UP to Panipat in Haryana.
Designed to boost inter-state trade and provide faster, safer travel, the four-to-six-lane (expandable to eight lanes) expressway will improve connectivity for thousands of UP workers employed in Haryana’s industrial regions. The proposed route will pass through key districts such as Siddharthnagar, Balrampur, Shravasti, Lucknow, Sitapur, Bareilly, and Moradabad, many of which are known for ODOP (One District One Product) items like Kalanamak rice from Siddharthnagar.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR), with construction expected to begin in 2026. The expressway will primarily follow a greenfield alignment, and work will be divided into 50–70 km packages to ensure completion within 2.5 years. Officials noted that the project will emphasize minimal tree felling and incorporate enhanced road safety features.
