Northeast Connected: The Rs 61,500 Crore Highway Upgrade

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), led by Minister Nitin Gadkari, has launched a Rs 61,500 crore infrastructural undertaking to establish a 630-km highway corridor connecting Siliguri, Guwahati, and Shillong.

Integrating new greenfield alignments with existing road improvements, the project aims to optimize transit efficiency and reinforce security and logistics around the Chicken's Neck corridor. By incorporating major segments—such as the Siliguri-Guwahati connection, the Shillong-Silchar route, the Gorakhpur-Siliguri expressway, and the Guwahati-Tezpur corridor—the initiative seeks to halve current travel durations, double average speeds, and seamlessly connect Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Assam.
