Thiruvananthapuram's New Model Road Nears Completion

The reconstruction and widening of the Pettah–Anayara–Oruvathilkotta model road in Thiruvananthapuram is nearing completion, offering long-awaited relief to commuters and residents impacted by persistent traffic congestion.

The Kerala Road Fund Board confirmed that the project remains on schedule for completion by December 2025, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban infrastructure upgrade.

The second stretch of the corridor—from Venpalavattom to Oruvathilkotta Temple—has entered the tarring phase, following the successful completion of key utility works, including the installation of utility ducts, a city gas line, and water pipelines. The final road surfacing will be done using BM and BC standard tarring, ensuring durability and smooth traffic flow.

"This is not just another road project; it represents a model for future urban development, opening a gateway to our city’s future,” said MLA Kadakampally Surendran, who recently visited the site for inspection.

Funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) at a cost of ₹143.6 crore, the project included land acquisition from 614 landowners, costing nearly ₹98 crore. The redevelopment covers:

2.4 km first stretch, 1.2 km second stretch, Footpaths and reconstructed pavements, 13 new bus shelters to enhance public transport accessibility, ₹12.7 crore allocated for utility shifting

Once completed, the model road is expected to significantly improve mobility, pedestrian safety, and last-mile connectivity in the fast-growing urban corridor.
