Coal India Limited (CIL) has taken a significant step into the renewable energy sector through a strategic partnership with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (UPRVUNL). The two entities signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on May 5, 2025, in Lucknow to jointly develop a 500 MW solar power plant in Uttar Pradesh.
This initiative is part of CIL’s broader transition toward green energy and supports the state’s growing demand for sustainable power. The MoU outlines the framework for the new solar facility and opens the door to further collaborations between CIL and UPRVUNL in the renewable energy space.
The move underscores Coal India’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio amid a national push for cleaner energy. Although CIL continues to lead India’s coal production, accounting for over 80% of domestic output, its foray into renewables marks a strategic shift in response to evolving energy priorities.
This solar venture follows CIL’s recent partnership with Damodar Valley Corporation to build a Rs 16,500 crore ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Jharkhand, aimed at enhancing energy efficiency.
