Delhi Assembly Shines: First in India to Run on Solar Power

The Delhi Legislative Assembly has become the first legislature in India to operate entirely on solar power, following the commissioning of a 500-kW rooftop solar plant.

In a parallel move, the Assembly also launched the National eVidhan Application (NeVA) as part of the Centre’s “One Nation, One Application” initiative. Full implementation is scheduled for the upcoming Monsoon Session.

Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal praised both initiatives as exemplary steps toward sustainable and digital governance.

Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta highlighted the solar initiative as a key milestone in Delhi’s transition to environmentally conscious and tech-enabled legislative operations. The solar plant, installed on the Assembly rooftop, is expected to generate savings of approximately ₹15 lakh per month (₹1.75 crore annually), with potential additional benefits through net metering.

The NeVA platform is designed to facilitate paperless, efficient legislative functioning, offering:

Smart delegate units with microphones and voting panels, RFID/NFC-based access for MLAs, Multilingual interface, Real-time access to documents via iPads, Automated audio-visual system with HD cameras, A secure, uninterrupted power-backed digital network, A successful trial run with MLAs confirmed NeVA’s readiness for deployment in the upcoming session.
