Kolkata's northern suburbs will soon have Metro connectivity to the airport, with operations expected to begin by June or July.
In April, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) will inspect the seven-kilometer Noapara–Airport (Jai Hind Metro station) corridor, a key segment of the Yellow Line’s Phase I, which extends 18 kilometers from Noapara to Barasat. The new underground station, located 13 meters beneath Kolkata's airport, ranks among Asia’s largest Metro facilities.
Originally, Phase I covered only the three-kilometer Noapara–Dum Dum Cantonment stretch, which has already received CRS approval. However, Metro Railway extended the project by four kilometers to expedite Kolkata’s first airport Metro link.
Spanning 29,000 square meters, the Airport Metro station boasts a spacious concourse and five platforms. Initially, only Platforms 1 and 2 will be in use, while Platforms 3, 4, and 5 are designated for the Orange Line (New Garia–Airport corridor), which will integrate with the Yellow Line at the airport. The daily ridership is expected to reach 80,000 passengers.
