The long-pending demand for improved road connectivity to Coimbatore International Airport has gained momentum, with the State Highways Department planning to extend the Neelikonampalayam railway overbridge (ROB) up to the airport.
The proposed extension is aimed at easing severe traffic congestion on Trichy Road, especially during peak hours and when trains pass through the Neelikonampalayam railway gate. The move has received strong support from local residents, daily commuters, and members of the district road safety committee, who have long called for a seamless and congestion-free airport link.
K Kathirmathiyon, a member of the Road Safety Committee, stressed the need to plan for future traffic growth, urging authorities to consider a four-lane flyover instead of the conventional two-lane structure.
A senior official from the State Highways Department confirmed that the proposal is under active consideration, with the revised plan now envisaging a two-kilometre flyover, doubling the length of the originally proposed one-kilometre structure.
