India is actively planning the establishment of a multifunctional airfield on the Minicoy Islands in Lakshadweep. This strategic initiative aims to create an integrated airfield capable of accommodating both military and commercial aircraft. The envisioned joint airfield is designed to support a diverse range of operations, including the deployment of fighter jets, military transport planes, and commercial flights.
This development project holds significance for national defense, as it would enhance the surveillance capabilities of the Indian armed forces in the Arabian Sea. Additionally, the expansion of aviation infrastructure in Minicoy is expected to stimulate tourism in the region, aligning with the government's vision for economic growth.
While currently, the only airstrip in the island territory is located in Agatti, it has limitations on the types of aircraft it can handle. Recognizing these constraints, the proposal to establish a new airport and expand existing facilities in Minicoy has been revived. Although the initial proposals were submitted earlier, recent efforts have reignited the government's commitment to realizing this vital airfield development.
