The Union Cabinet of India, chaired by Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal to declare Madurai Airport as an international airport.
Located in the temple city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, the airport is among the oldest aviation facilities in the state. It serves as a key gateway to the southern parts of Tamil Nadu and supports tourism and pilgrimage travel to the region.
According to the government, granting international status to the airport is expected to enhance regional and global connectivity, facilitate trade, and promote economic development. The move is also likely to attract more international tourists, pilgrims, and business travellers, reflecting Madurai’s historical, cultural, and religious significance.
