The Lotus Blooms: Navi Mumbai’s New Airport is Open

After decades of planning, the much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is set to commence commercial operations on December 25.

Developed as a greenfield project by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the airport represents a major milestone in strengthening regional connectivity, reducing travel time, and boosting tourism. On its inaugural day, NMIA is expected to handle around 30 air traffic movements, including arrivals and departures by major airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, Air India Express, and Star Air. The new airport will help ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing international airport and support the development of a multi-airport system for the region.

Featuring a distinctive lotus-inspired terminal design, NMIA is poised to act as a catalyst for regional economic growth, benefiting surrounding areas including Pune, Thane, and Raigad. Vijay Singhal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of CIDCO, said that the launch of operations reflects the Maharashtra government’s and CIDCO’s sustained commitment to infrastructure development.
