TN Shortlists Two New Sites for Chennai’s Second Airport

Following the decision to scrap the previously proposed greenfield airport project at Parandur over environmental and agricultural concerns, the Tamil Nadu government has shortlisted Cheyyur (Chengalpattu district) and Manellore near Gummidipoondi (Tiruvallur district) as alternative locations for Chennai’s second airport.

The state has forwarded these two new sites to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to conduct pre-feasibility and technical assessments. This search for alternative capacity runs parallel to ongoing optimization efforts at the existing Chennai International Airport in Meenambakkam, where the AAI is developing a new passenger-handling system on the north-western side to address near-term traffic demands.

The state aims to establish a robust long-term aviation network to support regional economic growth, with the final choice of location dependent on AAI's technical evaluation of airspace, connectivity, and regulatory clearances.
