Turbulence Ahead for Chennai’s Second Airport Project

The newly formed government led by C Joseph Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is facing a key policy decision regarding the proposed greenfield airport project at Parandur, a move that could significantly influence Chennai’s long-term aviation infrastructure strategy.

The proposed second airport at Parandur has emerged as an important project for passengers, industry participants, and investors, many of whom consider it essential for handling Chennai’s rising air traffic demand in the coming years. At the same time, uncertainty remains because Chief Minister Vijay had earlier voiced support for villagers and farmers opposing the project due to concerns over land acquisition and potential loss of livelihoods.

Speculation over the project’s future grew after reports suggested that Chief Minister Vijay had held a review meeting on the Parandur airport proposal. However, multiple government sources denied to BusinessLine that any such meeting had taken place, further adding to uncertainty around the status of the project.

The government’s final position on the proposed airport is expected to have major implications for infrastructure development, investor confidence, and Chennai’s plans to expand aviation capacity through a second international airport.
