The Government e-Market (GeM) is set to revolutionize public procurement by allowing construction and building work contracts to be bid through its online platform. GeM CEO Prashant Kumar Singh announced that the proposal is nearing completion and will soon be presented to the Department of Commerce for approval, marking a significant shift in the platform’s capabilities.
This ambitious plan, requiring the Union Cabinet's nod, is expected to be part of the new government's 100-day agenda. Singh expressed optimism at a press briefing, highlighting that approval is being sought for GeM works contracts within the initial 100 days. The Department of Commerce will play a crucial role in seeking the necessary green light from the Union Cabinet.
Currently, GeM is engaging in stakeholder consultations with buyers and construction agencies to gather inputs before finalizing the proposal. This initiative comes on the back of a record-breaking first quarter in 2024-25, where GeM’s total procurement of goods and services exceeded ₹1.24 lakh crore, a 136 percent increase compared to last year.
Central Ministries, particularly Coal, Defence, and Petroleum and Gas, alongside Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), have significantly contributed to this milestone, with CPSEs alone accounting for over ₹91,000 crore of the total procurement value.
To further its reach, GeM is launching the ‘GeM SAHAYAK’ program, aiming to create a network of 6,000-7,000 accredited trainers across India. These trainers will assist sellers and buyers in navigating the platform, enhancing business opportunities, and providing valuable services in bid creation.
