Powergrid Teleservices, a subsidiary of Powergrid Corporation, is strategically entering the burgeoning data center market to address the escalating need for data localization within the country. This strategic initiative was unveiled at Infocom 2023, the flagship event hosted by the ABP Group. The company's blueprint involves launching a pilot project in the National Capital Region (NCR) with an initial capacity of 15 megawatts. Concurrently, comprehensive studies will be conducted to pinpoint prospective locations in various regions across the nation.
The primary target audience for this venture is the public sector, reflecting a strong demand from government entities. Powergrid Teleservices is actively engaging in discussions with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to leverage its existing transmission infrastructure for establishing a robust long-distance telecommunication network. This network is envisioned to connect with neighboring countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
Beyond data centers, Powergrid Teleservices is keen on expanding its presence in the telecom sector. The company is capitalizing on its power transmission infrastructure, originally designed for managing bulk power, to facilitate the expansion of the optical fiber network. This innovative approach aligns with the broader vision of leveraging existing assets for diversified business verticals.
Furthermore, the overarching corporate objective of Powergrid, the parent company, is to achieve a revenue milestone of Rs 1,000 crore from its telecom business in the financial year 2023-24. This ambitious target underscores the company's commitment to driving growth and innovation in the rapidly evolving telecommunications landscape.
