Larsen & Toubro’s Precision Engineering & Systems business vertical has secured a prestigious contract to construct part of two Fleet Support Ships (FSS) for Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), with the Indian Navy as the end user. This order is part of a larger contract signed by the Indian Navy with HSL in August 2023 for the design and construction of five FSS vessels. These specialized naval ships are crucial for providing logistics and material support to naval task forces at sea.
The FSS will be among the largest vessels in the Indian Naval Fleet, with a length exceeding 220 meters and a displacement of approximately 45,000 tonnes. Aligned with the Government of India’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, these first-of-their-kind ships will be constructed domestically. To meet challenging delivery timelines, both HSL and L&T shipyards will work concurrently, enhancing the Indian Navy's capabilities while boosting economic activity and technological advancements in India’s maritime sector.
L&T’s greenfield shipyard at Kattupalli, near Chennai, will undertake the construction of the two Fleet Support Ships. This shipyard, India's most modern, is designed and built in-house, adhering to global technological standards. L&T's achievement in the defense shipbuilding sector is notable, having delivered over 70 defense vessels in just over a decade, often ahead of schedule.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward achieving strategic national objectives, rapidly enhancing the Indian Naval Fleet while driving the country's maritime domain forward. The project reflects L&T’s commitment to "Make in India" and showcases its capabilities in defense shipbuilding.
For verification, this project is a contract awarded to L&T for the construction of Fleet Support Ships as part of a larger deal between the Indian Navy and Hindustan Shipyard Limited.
