VA Tech Wabag, a leading water technology company, has secured a Rs 415-crore order from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) to operate and maintain the 110 megaliters per day SWRO Desalination Plant at Nemmeli, Chennai. This contract extends Wabag’s engagement with the plant for another seven years.
The Nemmeli desalination plant, inaugurated in 2013, is India’s first municipal desalination facility built on a design, build, operate (DBO) basis for drinking water purposes. Wabag initially completed its operation and maintenance (O&M) contract in 2021, after which the contract was extended by CMWSSB due to the company’s satisfactory performance.
CMWSSB recently floated a tender to continue the plant’s O&M, and Wabag secured the repeat order, reaffirming its expertise in water treatment and management. The plant plays a critical role in providing potable water to Chennai, a city that often faces water scarcity.
Wabag’s continued association with the Nemmeli plant underscores its commitment to delivering reliable water solutions. The contract not only strengthens the company’s portfolio but also reinforces Chennai’s water security through advanced desalination technology.
This new order highlights Wabag’s position as a leader in the water technology sector, particularly in the operation of large-scale desalination plants.
