The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has appointed contractors for nine major infrastructure projects worth ₹12,500 crore to improve connectivity across Mumbai and Thane. The projects, approved by MMRDA's executive committee, chaired by Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sujata Sainik, aim to enhance road networks and reduce travel time in the region.
Key projects include the ₹2,727-crore Balkum-Gaimukh Thane Coastal Road, a 13.45 km stretch designed to ease congestion. Another major undertaking is the ₹1,525.31 crore road from Kasarvadavali in Thane to Kharbao, Bhiwandi, spanning 3.93 km, which will significantly improve access between these areas.
The extension of the Eastern Freeway, from Ghatkopar to Thane, is one of the most notable projects, costing ₹2,727 crore for a 12.95 km elevated road. Additionally, ₹1,981.17 crore has been allocated for the construction of an elevated road connecting NH-4 (Old) to Katai Naka, further enhancing regional connectivity.
Other projects include the construction of several creek bridges, such as the Gaimukh to Payegaon bridge (6.509 km) for ₹975.58 crore, and the Kolshet to Kalher bridge (1.64 km) costing ₹288.18 crore. A foot overbridge at Teen Hath Naka in Thane, part of the Metro Line 4 and 4A projects, will be constructed for ₹68.08 crore.
These projects, encompassing over 50 km of road construction and widening, are set to transform transportation in the Mumbai-Thane region, reducing traffic bottlenecks and improving travel efficiency for millions of commuters.
