Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries Ltd has embarked on a ₹36,238 crore investment to establish a green hydrogen facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The project’s first phase involves a front-end engineering design contract awarded to Tecnimont and Nextchem, the engineering and sustainable technology arms of Italy-based Maire Tecnimont. This initial contract focuses on developing a green ammonia plant under Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India.
Earlier this year, Sembcorp signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government, detailing plans to generate approximately 1,511 jobs in Thoothukudi. Additionally, Sembcorp has partnered with Japan’s Sojitz Corp and Kyushu Electric Power to export the green hydrogen produced in India to Japan, strengthening international ties in renewable energy.
The engineering design study will utilize Nextchem’s ArcHy tool, which optimizes the use of renewable power by addressing its intermittent nature. This digital approach aims to enhance both capital and operational expenditure efficiency, promising a cost-effective lifecycle for the plant, as highlighted by Maire Tecnimont’s statement.
Maire Tecnimont CEO Alessandro Bernini expressed confidence in the project, citing their expertise in energy transition and green ammonia plants. He emphasized their commitment to cost-efficient, decarbonization-aligned engineering and technological solutions.
This initiative positions Tamil Nadu as a key player in green hydrogen innovation, boosting its export potential and contributing significantly to global energy transition efforts.
