L&T Viaduct Unveils Green Future for Suburban Rail in Bengaluru

Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has secured a significant milestone in India's infrastructure sector with the recent award of a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) by the Rail Infrastructure Development Company, Karnataka (K-RIDE) on 30th December 2023. The LoA signifies L&T's appointment for the construction of an elevated viaduct as part of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP).

Under this contract, L&T will be responsible for the design and construction of an elevated viaduct stretching 8.960 km and an at-grade viaduct spanning 37.920 km (excluding station buildings). This project is part of Corridor-4, known as the 'Kanaka' line, linking Heelalige and Rajanukunte.

Additionally, the agreement entails constructing a unique double-decker alignment, covering 1.2 km for BSRP Corridor-1 and Corridor-4 near Yelahanka. Another noteworthy aspect involves the construction of a BSRP elevated viaduct, spanning 500 meters beneath the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) viaduct at Benniganahalli, marking a first-of-its-kind integration in India.

Valued at Rs 1,040.51 crore, the contract will be executed in the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode over an estimated 30-month duration. The commencement of work is imminent, signifying the rapid progress of the BSRP initiative.

Previously, L&T was entrusted with the work for Corridor-2 (Chillabanawara to Baiyappanahalli spanning 25.2 km), and construction activities are currently underway. The recent contract award for Corridor-4 represents nearly 50 percent of the BSRP total project alignment, with Corridor 2 and 4 identified as Phase-I priority corridors by the Government of Karnataka. Moreover, invitations for tenders for Corridor-1 and Corridor-3 are anticipated to be announced shortly, further advancing this transformative suburban rail project in Bengaluru.
