GRSE Secures ₹840-Crore Deal for Cutting-Edge Ocean Research Vessel

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has clinched a major ₹840-crore contract with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), part of the Ministry of Earth Sciences. Signed on July 16, 2024, the agreement involves the construction of a state-of-the-art ocean research vessel (ORV), slated for delivery within 42 months.

This latest contract marks GRSE’s third significant order in just one month, underscoring the company's growing dominance in the field. GRSE has established a strong reputation for building survey vessels, evidenced by the delivery of INS Sandhayak—the largest survey vessel ever constructed in India—in December 2023.

The new ORV will be equipped for comprehensive underwater research, including swath multibeam and geophysical seismic surveys. It will support a range of activities from CTD profiling and biological sampling to rock dredging and seabed sampling.

Additionally, the vessel will facilitate atmospheric observations and meteorological measurements, enhancing its versatility for various scientific studies. It will also be capable of deploying and retrieving complex equipment and submersibles, expanding its research capabilities.

With this cutting-edge vessel, GRSE continues to push the boundaries of marine research technology.
