$3,394 Cr Shahpur Kandi Dam Project Kicks Off

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann inaugurated the ₹3,394.49 crore Shahpur Kandi Dam Project on November 5, 2025, marking a major milestone in the state’s efforts to boost power generation and strengthen irrigation infrastructure.

Jointly funded by the State and Central Governments, the project is designed to enhance water supply for agriculture in the Majha region, benefiting key districts such as Pathankot, Gurdaspur, and Amritsar. The dam will utilize water stored from the Ranjit Sagar Dam to optimize power generation and augment its total capacity to 600 MW.

In addition to generating clean energy, the project will provide irrigation to over 5,000 hectares of farmland and create significant employment opportunities for local communities.

The Shahpur Kandi Dam Project, which includes two powerhouses with a combined capacity of 206 MW, is expected to be fully operational by March 2026, contributing substantially to Punjab’s energy security and agricultural growth.
