Hydel Help on the Way: The 960 MW Polavaram Push

To ensure a reliable power supply, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has directed state power utilities to prepare for the anticipated surge in electricity demand, including expediting the commissioning of the 960 MW Polavaram Hydel Power Project by June–July 2027.

During a high-level review meeting, the Chief Secretary stressed the need for meticulous planning, greater integration of renewable energy, and maintaining grid stability. The state’s power demand is projected to reach 250–260 million units (MU) per day by March, with peak load expected to touch approximately 14,000 MW.

The Polavaram project is progressing at a fast pace, with six to seven of the 12 planned units likely to be operational by mid-2027. The entire project is scheduled for completion by December 2028. Major equipment has already been mobilized, and construction of the powerhouse and related infrastructure is underway.

The Polavaram Hydel Power Station, comprising 12 Kaplan turbine units of 80 MW each, will generate around 23 MU of electricity per day. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly enhance the state’s renewable energy capacity and strengthen overall grid reliability.
