The Telangana government has approved the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) proposal to develop a comprehensive Storm Water Master Plan for the Telangana Core Urban Region (TCUR)—a key economic and urban hub that includes Hyderabad and surrounding areas.
Sanctioned by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department, the plan aims to address chronic urban flooding, particularly in complex and densely populated catchments such as the Musi River, Hussain Sagar, and Osman Sagar.
The Master Plan’s objectives include:
Upgrading drainage infrastructure to prevent floods, Improving water quality through pollution control, Enabling cost-effective project prioritisation, Promoting green infrastructure solutions like rain gardens
The initiative will leverage a geo-referenced database of the existing storm water drainage system, alongside advanced hydraulic and hydrologic modelling for effective planning.
GHMC has been authorized to invite Expressions of Interest (EOI) from qualified consultants to prepare the plan. The GHMC Commissioner has been instructed to obtain all required approvals prior to initiating the tendering process.
