In a major step toward strengthening affordable healthcare, the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has announced plans to set up 20 new medical colleges across India over the next two years. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 3.72 crore insured workers and their families under the ESIC scheme.
Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, revealed that the first phase of the expansion will explore establishing 10 medical colleges in the 2025–26 fiscal year. Proposed locations include Pune and Nagpur (Maharashtra), Manesar (Haryana), Kollam (Kerala), Surat (Gujarat), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Asansol (West Bengal), Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), and Margao (Goa).
The Ministry emphasized the importance of this initiative in light of the rising costs of private healthcare. Once operational, the total number of ESIC medical colleges will increase to 31—28 managed directly by ESIC and three in collaboration with state governments. This expansion reflects ESIC’s strong commitment to improving access to quality medical education and strengthening the healthcare system for its vast network of beneficiaries.
