India's First: Deendayal Port Launches 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant

The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, has commissioned India’s first 1 MW green hydrogen plant, marking a major step forward in the country’s clean energy ambitions and maritime decarbonisation strategy.

Developed under the Make-in-India initiative and executed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the plant is expected to produce approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This facility represents the first phase of a planned 10 MW green hydrogen complex, the foundation stone for which was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2025.

The plant was inaugurated by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and aligns with the goals of Maritime India Vision 2030, supporting India’s transition toward sustainable port operations. It also builds on DPA’s earlier green initiatives, including the deployment of India’s first all-electric green tug.

Minister of State Shantanu Thakur called the project a testament to India’s leadership in clean energy, innovation, and self-reliance. The commissioning supports broader national efforts to integrate green hydrogen into industrial clusters, transportation, and refueling infrastructure, reinforcing India’s long-term energy transition roadmap.
