The Indore Metro project is set to undergo a major revision, with a 3.3-km core stretch between Khajrana Square and the railway station now planned as an underground corridor instead of an elevated one.
The change aims to minimise disruption in densely populated residential and commercial areas. However, it is expected to increase the project cost by around Rs 900 crore, which will be borne by the state government. The Indore Metro was originally planned as a 31.32-km network with an estimated cost of Rs 7,500.8 crore. The decision to shift the alignment underground follows strong opposition from local residents, who raised concerns about the potential impact of an elevated corridor on daily life and business activities.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the revised plan reflects the government’s effort to balance urban infrastructure development with the need to reduce inconvenience to citizens, noting that the underground alignment would significantly ease public concerns.
