Nagpur took a crucial step toward modernizing its urban transport system as a high-level committee, chaired by Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari, convened its second meeting on Friday to review the draft Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP).
Jointly developed by MahaMetro and the Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), the CMP presents a long-term vision for creating an efficient, integrated, and sustainable mobility framework for the city.
“This was our second high-level review meeting, during which the preparing agencies gave a detailed presentation covering all aspects of the plan,” Bidari stated. “We have now asked all stakeholders to submit their final suggestions within a week. A conclusive meeting will follow before the plan is submitted to the Chief Minister and other key ministers.”
Anilkumar Kokate, Director of Strategic Planning at MahaMetro, outlined the technical underpinnings of the CMP. He explained that the plan is based on extensive traffic surveys, a detailed road network analysis, and feedback from various government departments. It includes strategic recommendations such as optimized traffic flows, improved bus terminal locations, and identification of infrastructure gaps.
One key proposal aims to restructure intercity bus operations by rerouting them to terminals on the city's outskirts. This shift is expected to ease congestion in the city center and improve the integration of different transport modes.
The CMP also emphasizes improved coordination among city buses, metro lines, and shared mobility services. Beyond infrastructure development, it offers guidance for future policy and regulatory changes to support Nagpur’s evolving mobility needs.
The review meeting saw active participation from major stakeholders, including the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), MahaMetro, the Public Works Department (PWD), Traffic Police, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), and others. Consolidated feedback from all entities was included in the presentation, highlighting a collaborative approach to planning.
With one more round of stakeholder consultations planned, the finalized CMP is expected to be submitted to the Chief Minister and key government officials next month. City officials view the plan as a foundational step in transforming Nagpur’s urban transport infrastructure.
