BMC Achieves Major Breakthrough in ₹515-Crore Water Project

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has achieved a significant breakthrough in its Rs 515.16-crore water supply project with the successful tunnelling of a key segment linking the Powai reservoir to Ghatkopar.

The 4.4 km tunnel will connect the high-level Powai reservoir to the low-level Ghatkopar reservoir, replacing the ageing surface pipeline and enhancing water supply to Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. Executed by Patel Engineering for BMC’s Water Supply Projects Department, the project began in 2023 and is scheduled for completion by March 1, 2027.

The tunnel boring machine (TBM)-driven section spans 2.7 km at a depth of 60 metres, with an external diameter of 2.80 metres and a finished internal diameter of 2.20 metres—designed to minimise surface disruption in densely populated areas.

“The reservoir’s duty will significantly increase upon completion, improving water distribution in the L and N wards,” a senior BMC official stated. Steel reinforcement for RCC works is currently underway following last month’s breakthrough.
