The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has initiated a Rs 300-crore infrastructure project under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) to address intermittent water supply disruptions. The project was approved at the DJB board meeting.
This initiative involves constructing an 11-km-long pipeline to connect the Haiderpur Water Treatment Plant (WTP) to the Wazirabad Barrage, providing an alternative source of raw water when ammonia levels in the Yamuna River exceed treatable limits. The 2,400-mm diameter pipeline will transport water from the Haiderpur WTP, which receives its supply from the Carrier Line Channel (CLC), or Munak Canal, originating in Karnal, Haryana.
The CLC currently supplies around 680 cusecs of raw water to multiple treatment plants in Delhi. The new pipeline will reduce reliance on Wazirabad-sourced water, ensuring more stable water production at affected treatment plants such as Wazirabad and Chandrawal.
This project is expected to be completed within two years and is a direct response to recent instances where ammonia concentrations in the Yamuna have spiked to as high as five parts per million (ppm), while treatment plants are designed to process water with a maximum ammonia concentration of one ppm. Additionally, desilting work at the Wazirabad facility is underway to double its storage capacity in the next one to one-and-a-half months.
