Magellan Aerospace Corporation, a Canadian aerospace systems manufacturer, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian contract manufacturing firm Aequs to establish a sand-casting facility at the Belagavi Aerospace Cluster (BAC) in Karnataka.
Finalized on March 6, 2025, the agreement aims to strengthen sand-casting capabilities in Southeast Asia, serving both commercial and defense aerospace markets. Magellan, recognized as a center of excellence for sand castings in North America, specializes in producing complex geometries using the chemically bonded sand process. The company and Aequs previously collaborated to launch Aerospace Processing India (API) in 2007 and signed an MoU in 2024 to explore a joint aircraft engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in Karnataka, catering to Airbus and Boeing.
Magellan’s President, Phillip Underwood, emphasized the venture’s strategic importance, stating, “Magellan is committed to supporting the growth of this capability in India. We are ready to meet our casting customers’ evolving needs with the cost-effective, high-quality solutions they expect.”
Aequs Chairman Aravind Melligeri highlighted the advancements in sand-casting technology, which enable the production of lightweight yet durable components that meet stringent aerospace standards. He also noted that the new facility will further enhance Aequs’ vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities at BAC.
This initiative aligns with the rising demand for sand-casting in aerospace manufacturing and strengthens both companies’ positions in India’s expanding aerospace sector.
