Significant strides have been made in the comprehensive modernization of Kasimedu Fishing Harbour, Chennai’s vital hub for marine and fishing activities. With nearly 80% of infrastructure development now complete, the historic facility is poised for a transformative upgrade by the end of the year.
Sunil Paliwal, Chairman of the Chennai Port Trust, noted the crucial backing from the Central Government, which allocated ₹97 crore towards this extensive redevelopment. A key milestone is the construction of approximately 1,000 meters of a new 1,300-meter-long peripheral wall, aimed at bolstering the harbour's security and defining its boundaries.
To improve internal mobility, a new peripheral road is being laid to ease chronic traffic congestion and streamline the movement of goods and people throughout the harbour.
Among the most impactful upgrades for the fishing community is the completion of an expansive 86,000 sq. ft. boat-repair yard. Additionally, a dedicated parking facility for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers has been established, addressing longstanding issues with disorganized and inadequate parking.
Sanitation and environmental sustainability have also been prioritized. Two high-capacity treatment plants—one for sewage and another for effluents, each with a capacity of 75,000 liters—are nearing completion. These plants will play a critical role in curbing the flow of untreated waste into Chennai’s drainage systems, substantially improving hygiene standards within the harbour.
Water supply infrastructure has been significantly upgraded with a new overhead tank and sump, collectively capable of storing one lakh liters of water. Additional facilities nearing completion include modern toilet blocks, an administrative building, and dedicated retail spaces for boat spare parts.
Once finalized, these developments will mark a significant milestone in the modernization of Kasimedu Fishing Harbour, enhancing operational efficiency, improving working conditions for fishermen, and reinforcing the harbour's role as a cornerstone of Chennai’s fishing industry.
