GMDC's Lignite Engine Revs Up South Gujarat

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) has resumed operations at the Tadkeshwar lignite mines situated in south Gujarat, which are estimated to hold reserves sufficient for the next seven years. The company secured clearance from the Union Environment Ministry in February 2022 to extend lignite mining up to 135 meters, a significant increase from the earlier permitted depth of 94 meters. Commencing in January 2024, lignite dispatches from Tadkeshwar are anticipated to begin following the completion of earth removal and the initiation of mining operations from November. This resurgence is expected to positively impact lignite production in the final quarter of the financial year.

GMDC, a key lignite producer in India, has plans to develop six new lignite mines with reserves nearing 400 million tonnes. To mitigate increased transportation costs resulting from relying on mines in Bhavnagar districts after the closure of the Tadkeshwar mine, GMDC is strategizing the development of a new mine at Ghala, closer to the Tadkeshwar site.

The Tadkeshwar mine, an open-cast lignite mine established in 2003-04 in Surat district, holds crucial significance for GMDC. This mine caters to numerous lignite customers within the industrial belt spanning Bharuch and Surat districts in Gujarat. Landslides previously led to a complete halt in mining activities, causing disruptions. However, with the resumption of operations, GMDC anticipates rejuvenating its lignite production, catering to the industrial demands of the region.
