Steel Authority of India (SAIL) plans to commence operations at its four MTPA Tasra coking coal mine in Jharkhand by the latter half of 2026.
This initiative is part of SAIL’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported coking coal and support its expansion plans to increase crude steel production capacity to 35.65 MTPA by 2031. Currently, only 16 percent of SAIL’s coking coal demand is met domestically. In FY24, the company consumed 19.37 million tonnes (MT) of coking coal, with just 2.45 MT sourced from within India.
Enhancing domestic mining capabilities will help SAIL lower import costs and ensure a stable supply of raw materials to support its growing steel production needs.
