Big Japanese Players Bet on Odisha Green Ammonia

A consortium of leading Japanese companies—comprising IHI Corporation, Hokkaido Electric Power, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Mizuho Bank, and Tokyo Century Corporation—has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore investment in a green ammonia project.

In collaboration with ACME Group, the consortium plans to develop a green ammonia production facility in Odisha by 2030. The facility is expected to produce 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, which will be transported to Japan for use in power generation and chemical manufacturing.

The six companies will leverage their technical and financial expertise to evaluate the establishment of a special-purpose company (SPC) for ammonia production and investment participation. As a next-generation clean energy source, ammonia holds significant potential for decarbonizing power plants, shipping, and various industrial applications.
