Sembcorp Energy India Ltd (SEIL), now under Oman-based Tanweer Infrastructure, is set to enhance power supply in Andhra Pradesh with the launch of a new unit in Nellore. This development comes in response to the state's recent white paper on power sector challenges and aims to address its growing energy needs.
Tanweer Infrastructure, having acquired SEIL in a ₹11,700 crore deal in 2022, currently operates four units, with one dedicated to Andhra Pradesh and the others serving Telangana and Bangladesh. Following the expiration of an eight-year contract for 570 MW with Telangana, Andhra Pradesh is poised to benefit from this available capacity.
SEIL, managing two supercritical coal-fired plants in Nellore with a total capacity of 2.6 GW, has optimized its coal supply through robust agreements with Coal India. This ensures a high domestic coal utilization rate and operational stability. Despite political unrest in Bangladesh, SEIL’s power supply remains stable, fulfilling its contractual commitments.
The new unit will significantly bolster Andhra Pradesh’s power supply, addressing current shortages and reinforcing the state’s energy infrastructure. This strategic move is expected to provide a crucial boost to the state's power stability and reliability.
