All Aboard: Nagpur Metro Plans ₹300 Crore Extension

The Maharashtra government has directed MahaMetro to expedite the creation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a 1.3-kilometer extension of the Nagpur Metro. This new stretch, which will extend the line from Automotive Square to Kanhan village, is estimated to cost approximately ₹300 crore.

The DPR will form the foundation for a presentation to the state government and is crucial for securing final approval for the project.

“A senior state official has instructed us to fast-track the DPR preparation for the 1.3 km extension. The process has already been initiated,” confirmed a senior MahaMetro official.

The extension will introduce a 13th station along the Kamptee corridor and include the construction of a 500-meter steel viaduct over the Kanhan River. Once completed, this extension will increase the total length of Nagpur Metro's Phase 2 to over 45 kilometers.

RITES, the agency that previously prepared the DPR for the main Phase 2, is expected to assist with the Kanhan extension as well. Once the state government approves the DPR, the proposal will be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for central clearance.

With over 90% of the land acquisition for Phase 2 already completed, civil work is progressing steadily. The extension is set to improve connectivity for residents in northern Nagpur, reduce road congestion, and expand the city’s metro network to accommodate more commuters.
